Domestic Violence Awareness Month: (IAMWORTHY)

"He's such a nice guy"

"That's one of my best friends, I don't believe her."

"If he did hit her, then she deserved it..."

"She just wants attention."

We've all heard the Aunties, the Randoms, the Pick-Me's and the misinformed spew these hateful, victim blaming quotes. Most recently, we've watched it occur right before our eyes with artist such as Megan thee Stallion.

Far too often, violence against women, especially Black Women, is a portal to more abuse, online bullying and victim shaming. Over the years, I've learned to not take these attacks personal, and realize that it is truly a cultural disease. I remember these same sentiments being said about women as it relates to sexual assault and abuse as well. Growing up, I was "warned" about women like Anita Hill, Robin Givens and Anna Nicole Smith, who were all the "she-devils" known for "bringing down our black men" and "embarrassing us".

As an adult, I am horrified and repulsed by such misguided views. The toxic malevolent self destructing perspective that black women have been coxed into adapting to "protect our black men" at the expense of our own demise is sickening. It's a tertiary veil wrapped around an already blurring Double Conscious. It is the same reason we scream AllBlackLivesMatter and SayHerName.

This month, we put the blame where it belongs (on the attackers) and uplift those who deserve it (the survivors). Join me as I stand with Jewel the Gem productions in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month for "(I AM) WORTH OF LOVE & LIBERATION."
